Night of the animals

Last night we went to the beach to just see the sun set and see if we would manage to see some sea turtle hatchlings. Well, we did not really see the sun set, it was pretty lame, but we did find two leatherback hatchlings. Previous days we had seen some tracks of the hatchlings and now we dug the nest a little bit to see if any hatchligs were left behind from this batch. And there was. These two were a bit weak and it took a while for the to reach the sea.

We discussed weather it is better for us to intervene and give them the chance in the water, how ever slim, or should we not dig the nest and let nature to take its course. There is really no right answer to this. No research to back up our actions. But this time we decided to give them a chance. Maybe they became fish food, but at least they got the chance.

Later when we came back to the base we helped to release a juvenile manicou (opossum) back to the woods. While we walked there, we saw several small tree boas. Quite exiting as these are quite rare animals also. We lauhged at ourselves as we took photos of the snakes when many people would have screamed and run off.

After all the animal activity, we were a bit tired and pretty much went to bed. Such was our first night off.
