Back in Tanzania

It's been almost a year since my last post and I am quite shamed about it. I am back in Tanzania and now working together with a local NGO on conservation and fair trade projects. The first month has been very exciting and after a bit of a slow start I have been become very busy.

During the first month I managed to return back to Zanzibar and volunteer with a small Finnish team at the turtle project in the northern part of the Island. This time I brought with me some instruments to measure hatchlings and larger turtles. My scale was not large enough and I need to buy a new one, but the caliper came handy already when a surprise nest hatched on the beach.

It was actually quite unfortunate happening. A local man had found the nest on some other beach and relocated some of the eggs to the Nungwi beach to a very shallow hole. He had not informed the project about this and so we only learned about it when the baby turtles came out. Only 20 of the 72 eggs hatched on the day.

After the local man dug the hatchlings out of the nest, I started opening the eggs to see what was the development status of them. At this point I opened one egg and realized that the full term hatchling was still alive in there, but not ready to hatch yet. I was very happy that I had had a discussion with one of the co-workers in Thailand project about what to do, if you encounter this situation. Now this information came very handy as I did not want to open more of the heavier eggs in case there were still hatchlings waiting for the right moment.

I ended up taking two of the half open eggs and wrap them in toilet paper, place them in a sand filled basin, cover it with my towel and bring them to safety of my room. Or that's what I thought. Next day I realized that the cleaning lady had emptied the basin and taken the little toilet paper wraps to a garbage! Freaking out, I run to the staff of the project and we went to look for the poor hatchlings. These two are destined to be survivors as they managed to survive this dumster adventure and couple days later were ready to join their sisters.

A third hatchling hatched also from the 7 eggs we took to incubation. I taught couple of the project staff on how to measure the hatchlings and we also counted the scutes. Here we saw what can happen when eggs are in too hot place; many of the hatchlings had anormalities in the carapace scutes. It most likely means also that all the hatchlings of this nest are females.

We agreed with the project that half of the hatchlings can be released to the sea with some of the 4 month old hatchlings. So at the dawn we took the hatchlings around the corner to a quiet part of the beach and let them go. The freshly hatched ones went right away to the sea, but the ones who had spent 4 months in captivity needed time to figure out what is happening. Slowly they crawled towards the sea and in the end all of them disappeared into the dark water. It was very satisfying event.

During our week at the project, we also cleaned a lot of hatchlings and the larger green turtles too. They tend to gather a lot of algie when they are held in the pools. In the wild, the larger turtles would find cleaning stations to get rid of stuff on their skin and carapace, but here, although natural seawater pond, they don't have this kind of cleaning services.

While we cleaned them, we also took measurements of the carapace and took photos to ID them. These turtles do not yet have ID tags, but luckily the green turtles are very differently colored. This was also a good opportunity to take photos of their faces as it is said that they all have different scute patterns in the

faces and can be identified. I want to go back and measure these turtles again in a month so that we can follow their growth.

The week at the project, made me want to help to develop this project and train local staff to take better care of the turtles. So we decided together with the project staff to ask sponsorships for the turtles. I posted this request at the Ekomatkaajat facebook page and right away we found the first sponsor. That is so cool! Projekteja etsimässä Tansaniassa

Tänä kesänä olen tutustunut Tansanian mahtavaan luontoon ja mahdollisuuksiin tehdä vapaaehtoistyötä luonnon ja eläinten hyväksi. Matkani tavoitteena on kehittää vapaaehtoisprojekteja yhteistyössä paikallisen organisaation kanssa, joka on jo pitkään tehnyt työtä mm. musiikin parissa, kouluissa, orpokodeissa ja terveyspuolella.Heillä ei kuitenkaan ole kokemusta eläin- ja luontoprojekteista saatika resursseja lähetä kehittämään jälleen yhtä aluetta.

Kahden kuukauden aikana ehdin tutustua pienen kylän arkeen lähellä Serengetin kansallispuistoa ja nähdä miten kansallispuistoon kohdistuva massiivinen turismi ei juuri mitenkään hyödytä sen lähellä asuvia kyläläisiä. Paikallisessa koulussa on 500 oppilasta ja 8 opettajaa, joiden englanninkielen taito on niin heikko, etteivät he pysty opettamaan oppilailleen tätä kriittistä kielitaitoa, jotta nämä voisivat jatkaa opiskelua 6. luokan jälkeen. 7. luokasta ylöspäin opiskelu tapahtuu pääosin englanniksi.
Siksi päätimme kylän ensimmäisen vapaaehtoisen Anne Lehtovaaran kanssa auttaa englannin opetuksessa sen sijaan, että olisimme keskittyneet ainoastaan luontoasioihin.

Kumpikaan meistä ei ole aiemmin opettanut koulussa, ja ensimmäinen tunti oli todella vaikea. Lapset katsoivat meitä suu auki, eivätkä juuri uskaltaneet avata suutaan. Kolmasluokkalaisina he eivät osanneet englantia juuri yhtään, eikä opettajaa näkynyt. Onneksi meillä oli mukana tansanialainen tiiminvetäjä, joka on opettaja ammatiltaan ja hänen avullaan saimme opetuksen käyntiin. Kolmannella tunnilla oppilaat halusivat niin innokkaasti oppia numeroita englanniksi, että aamupuuro sai odottaa. Oli aika sydäntäsärkevää jättää oppilaat, mutta talviloma alkoi ja koulu sulki ovensa.

 Toinen asia johon päätimme paikallisen organisaation kanssa keskittyä on turismi. Miten voisimme auttaa paikallista yhteisöä hyötymään edes vähän heidän kylänsä läpi ajavien ja ympäröivien luksus-majoitusten asiakkaiden rahoista? Tutustuimme paikalliseen kulttuuriin, opettelimme Ikoma-heimon perinteisiä tansseja, vuokrasimme kylästä auton ja oppaan yösafarille, bongailimme lintuja ja maistoimme vatsavaivojen uhalla paikallista omatekoista sahtia.

Kokemuksen jälkeen, olen aika varma, että myös turistit nauttisivat tutustuessaan paikallisten kulttuuriin ja tapoihin. Mutta ne pitää pukea tarpeeksi myyvään ja ammattimaiseen pakettiin. Siinä on hommaa joksikin aikaa. Itse aloitin ottamalla valokuvia mm. heidän tanssiryhmästään ja luovutan nämä ryhmän käyttöön markkinoinnissa.

Toki nautimme upeasta luonnosta ja eläimistä Serengetissä, Ngorongoron kraaterissa ja Manyaran järvellä. Kuinka harmi olisi jos suunniteltu tie läpi kansallispuiston toteutuu. Olihan se tie heikossa kunnossa, mutta eikö ole mitään muuta vaihtoehtoa tavaroiden ja ihmisten kuljettamiselle. Päällystetyllä tiellä kuskit tuskin paljon piittaavat villieläimistä ja eläinten kuolleisuus liikenneturmissa nousee aivan sataprosenttisen varmasti.

Moshissa tutustuimme puiden taimitarhaan ja paperintekoon ja nautiskelimme Kilimanjaron kahvista. Pohdiskelimme millaisesta kokemuksesta suomalaiset pitäisivät tällä alueella. Päätimme kehitellä ajatusta Extreme Tanzania -teemalla, joka ei sovi heikkohermoisille eikä hienohelmoille, mutta jossa pääsee kokemaan luonnon ja paikallista kulttuuria todella läheltä hajuineen ja makuineen.

Pohdimme myös paikallisen organisaation kanssa, millaisia vapaaehtoismahdollisuuksia voisimme tarjota ja mitä projektien aloittaminen vaatii. Ilman rahallista sijoitusta, projektien aloittaminen on lähes mahdotonta ja ilman markkinointia projektit eivät välttämättä saa riittävästi vapaaehtoisia, jotta ne nousisivat kestävälle pohjalle kohtalaisen nopeasti.Samalla pitää miettiä, että mistä ja miten projektiin saadaan sopivaa paikallista työvoimaa. Vapaaehtoisprojektissa tarvitaan mm. tiiminvetäjiä, jotka opastavat ja ohjaavat vapaaehtoisia; talo, johon vapaaehtoiset voi majoittaa turvallisesti; autokuskeja, kokki, siivooja, yövartija jne. Jonkun pitää myös koordinoida tätä kaikkea ja hoitaa palkkojen maksut ja muu rahaliikenne. Ja tietysti se markkinointi. Hommaa piisaa, mutta haluamme saada aikaan positiivisen muutoksen ja motivaatiota tuo se, että tiedämme sen olevan mahdollista.

Siinä on vielä paljon työtä ja päätettävää, mutta toivottavasti saamme projektin käyntiin lähitulevaisuudessa. Projektit tullaan julkaisemaan www.ekomatkaajat.fi -sivustolla heti kun ne ovat valmiita.

Sansibarilla teimme vapaaehtoistyötä merikilpikonnaprojektissa, joka on jo usean vuoden ajan tehnyt kilpikonnien suojelutyötä ja ottaa vastaan vapaaehtoisia. Tavoitteeni osallistuessani tähän projektiin oli selvittää onko projekti oikealla asialla, sillä maailmalta löytyy paljon ns. suojeluprojekteja, joiden ainoa tavoite on rahan ansaitseminen eikä niinkään eläinten tai luonnonsuojelu. Olen vahvasti sitä mieltä, että luonnonsuojelusta saa ja pitääkin ansaita myös elanto, sillä muuten monetkaan paikalliset eivät pysty muuttamaan luontoa tuhoavia tapojaan. Vaikka merikilpikonnat ovat Tansaniassa lailla suojeltuja, yhä monissa paikoissa niitä pyydystetään ruuaksi. Jos suojelusta ei jotkut saa elantoaan, ilmainen ruoka vie voiton.

Jotkut projektit on aloitettu hyvää tarkoittaen, mutta projektitiimin taidot ja tiedot eivät ole riittävät tekemään kaikkea oikein. Tällaisissa tapauksissa pitää miettiä kumpi vaihtoehto olisi parempi; pyrkiä auttamaan projektia eteenpäin tukemalla projektin kehitystä esim. koulutuksella, osaavilla vapaaehtoisilla jne. vai olla tukematta projektia. Päätökset eivät ole helppoja, varsinkaan kun ihmiset ovat mukavia ja vaihtoehtona on se, että projekti jatkaa nykyistä menoaan. Tällä kertaa päätös on tukea projektia ja pyrkiä kehittämään toimintatapoja paremmiksi. Miten se onnistuu, nähdään tulevaisuudessa. Seuraavaksi jatkan omia kilpikonnaopintojani Italian pelastuskeskuksessa ja Thaimaan merikilpikonnaprojektissa. Molemmissa on hyviä, kokeneita asiantuntijoita, joilta voin kysyä myös näihin uusiin projekteihin liittyvistä haasteista. Jakamalla osaamistamme, voimme auttaa toisia paremmin suojelemaan meille rakkaita eläimiä ja luontoa.

Thaimaan kilpikonnaprojektin parhaat

Voi hyvänen aika! En sitten saanut kirjoitettua kuin yhden kerran koko viiden kuukauden projektin aikana. Aika vain meni niin nopeasti, etten saanut aikaiseksi kirjoituksia. Ne lyhyet hetket, jolloin oli aikaa tehdä tietokoneella hommia, menivät pitkälti sähköposteihin vastaillessa, datan tallennukseen, valokuvien lataamiseen ja lyhyiden facebook-viestien kirjoittamiseen. Ja jotenkin tietokoneen kanssa työskentely ei ole ensimmäisenä mielessä projektissa ollessa.

Lupaan parantaa kuitenkin tapani ja saada tulevaisuudessa aikaiseksi edes lyhyitä kirjoituksia projektin aikana.

Koska on aika mahdotonta kirjoittaa kaikesta mitä viiden kuukauden aikana tapahtui, aion jakaa vain muutamia kohokohtia ja tietty valokuvia. Niitä tuli otettua toista tuhatta, joten hetki menee ennen kuin kaikki kuvat on käyty läpi. Varsinkin kun innostuin tällä kertaa ottamaan valokuvia linnuista...

Tässä siis parhaita paloja:

"Free of Danger"
Tsunamin muistopäivänä 27.12.2011 saimme Phuket Marine Biology Centeristä nuoren liemikilpikonnan päästettäväksi vapauteen. Vaikka tilanne sinänsä oli haasteellinen, se meni lopulta hyvin ja kaikki olivat tyytyväisiä. Kilpikonna sai nimekseen "Free of Danger" vapaahko käänös Thain kielisestä nimestä.

3 pesää: 212 poikasta
Liemikilpikonna pesi 3 kertaa rannalla ja jokainen pesintä oli meille huipputärkeä juttu. Itse en ollut paikalla ensimmäisen pesinnän aikana, sillä se tapahtui Uuden Vuoden aattona. Sen jälkeen todennäköisesti sama kilpikonna pesi vielä kahdesti. Poikaset kuoriutuivat helmi-maaliskuun vaihteessa ja pesistä kuoriutui yhteensä 212 poikasta. Kolmannen pesän menestys oli aiva loistava, sillä pesässä oli 94 munaa, joista 93 oli kuoriutunut. Tuollaisia pesiä on harvoin ja olimme tästä erityisen iloisia.

Barney ja kaverit
Tietysti se, että käyttäytymistutkimuksessa nähtiin liemikilpikonnia uiskentelevan meressä kohtalaisen usein, oli myös hieno juttu. Yhdellä kilpikonnalla oli kilvessään "barnacles" sai se nimekseen Barney. Barney taisi asustella lähellä, sillä se nähtiin useaan otteeseen ja välillä muitakin.

Tiimi ja vapaaehtoiset
Jokainen kausi on erilainen ja projektin henki riippuu paljon tiimistä. Meillä oli viiden kuukauden aikana lähes 30 vapaaehtoista ja 6 työntekijää projektissa ja kaikki olivat mukavia, tekivät töitä olan takaa ja jokainen toi projektiin oman osaamisensa ja ajatuksensa. Toivon, että jokainen projektiin osallistunut nautti kokemuksestaan ja mahdollisimman moni tekisi vapaaehtoistyötä toisenkin kerran. Toki oli kivaa, että tällä kertaa projektissa kävi myös useita aiemmin projektissa olleita. Se on merkki siitä, että projekti ja paikka ovat tosiaan ainutlaatuisia.

Luonto ja eläimet
Viiden kuukauden aikana ehtii tosiaan nähdä paljon ja tällä kertaa koin useampia mielenkiintoisia, uusia, hauskoja ja joskus hieman hätkähdyttäviäkin kohtaamisia luonnossa.

Kiitos kauden ensimmäisen vapaaehtoisen, kiinnostuin saaren linnuista ja opin tunnistamaan ehkä 50 eri lajia. Toki monet lajit ovat edelleen mysteerejä, sillä usein niistä näki vain vilahduksen tai kuulee laulun pusikosta. Lintujen parissa meni monta aamua ja iltapäivää ja nyt suunnittelen lintujen kartoituksen lisäämistä projektiin ensi kaudella.

Tehdessämme merenalaista kartoitusta, kohtasin itseäni suuremman rauskun melkein silmästä silmään ja kun sydän oli palannut kurkusta takaisin paikalleen, pystyi ihailemaan tuota mahtavaa eläintä vähän enemmän. Kovin lähelle en uskaltautunut, joten kuvassa se näyttää kovin pieneltä. :)

Käärmeiden kanssa saa aina olla varovainen, mutta täytyy sanoa, että tämän kauden kokemuksen perusteella, ne harvemmin käyvät samantien kimppuun, kunhan antaa niiden mennä menojaan rauhassa. Kolme kertaa olin oho!-etäisyydellä, mutta jokainen meni menojaan, kunhan molemmat oltiin toivuttu säikähdyksestä. Yksikään käärmeistä ei ollut myrkyllinen, mutta sen harvemmin tietää juuri silloin kun on melkein astunut päälle.

Näin projektin aikana paljon muitakin mielenkiintoisia eläimiä; merisaukon, delfiinejä, sambarhirven, liskoja, apinoita, perhosia, maa- ja makeanveden kilpikonnia ja näin jäkiä rannalla, joista en vielä tiedä mitä ne kaikki ovat.

Saarella on vielä niin paljon tutkimatonta luontoa, odotan mielenkiinnolla ensi kautta ja uusia kohtaamisia. Koh Phra Thong ja Ko Ran saaret ovat vielä hyvin paljon luonnollisessa tilassaan ja kaukana massaturismista ja siksi mahtavia paikkoja.

Opin tällä kaudella paljon muutakin uutta; kasaamaan eri eläinten luurankoja, thain kieltä (tosin enemmänkin olisi voinut oppia), solmuvärjäyksen saloja, buddhalaisia seremonioita, etsimään eläimiä mudan joukosta, uusia kikkoja valokuvaukseen...

Tietenkään projektityö ei ole pelkkää mahtavuutta koko ajan ja haasteitakin riitti, mutta niistä onneksi selvittiin ihan kunnialla. Tsunamivaroitus huhtikuun 12. päivä aiheutti huolta, ja herätti varmasti monessa vaikeita muistoja. Paikallisen kulttuurin ja ajatusten ymmärtäminen on yksi isoimmista haasteista ja erilaisten odotusten yhteensovittaminen aiheuttaa joskus aikamoista päänvaivaa. Mutta kaiken kaikkiaan, nautin työstäni projektissa niin paljon, että olen jo lupautunut palata takaisin ensi kaudella.

Thaimaan merikilpikonnaprojekti

December in the sea turtle project

One month in the sea turtle project has gone by very fast. It feels like we just arrived to the Island, but when looking back, all kinds of things have happened. Many such that have not happened before.

 On one my first walks on the beach I spotted an otter. Some people reported seeing them last season, but we had not seen any before and I did not manage to see one. This time I saw one running in the vegetation line, but I did not have my camera ready, so I only managed to get photos of the tracks. Interestingly right next to the otter foot prints were also some kind of cat prints. They looked a bit too far apart to be from a domestic cat and we don’t have too many of them on the Island, so maybe these were leopard cat prints.

In the mid December we received our first Thai volunteers. It was great. Two Thai girls from Bangkok spent 10 days with us and it was nice experience for all of us. We learned a lot about our village and local people and the girls seemed to enjoy the project and especially the reef survey we did during their stay. We hope to have more Thai volunteers in the future.

Before Christmas also our first Finnish volunteer of the season arrived and she is a keen bird watcher. This meant that we all started to pay more attention to the bird species of the Island. Within just few days we realized how many different bird species we can spot just around our village. Even I, who am not so good identifying different birds, have learned to know some characteristics of birds. And thanks to our volunteer, I have now names to put to my photos. I am especially happy about a photo of 3 Lesser Adjutant Storks, 4 parakeets spotted on the savannah and Woodpeckers seen from my window.


In the observation we have been spotting few juvenile green turtles swimming about and eating jellyfish. Last season we kept seeing many green turtles in the area, but now it seem there are less of them around.

One special moment occurred when on the 26th of December we had a 2004 tsunami memorial in our village and the chief had requested that we would release a sea turtle. First we did not think we could get one, but amazingly everything came together on Christmas Eve and Phuket Marine Biology Centre gave us one 14 months old green turtle to be released. Very high official Mr. Ambur came to the memorial event and he was the one releasing the turtle. On the little beach behind the village he named the turtle ‘Free of Danger’ and we watched it swim in the sea first time in its life. We were very happy to see it go and hopefully it will live up to its name and stay away from fishing gear and plastic in the sea.

But the best was saved for the last day of the year. On the morning of New Year’s Eve, we found a green turtle nest on the beach 1. Finding it was a bit dramatic as our staff member who found the nest saw a boat hanging around near the nest and she said it seemed that the nest area was marked with flags and sticks. This meant that our staff had to be extra careful to cover up the area after egg chamber was found and we confirmed the existence of the eggs. The team camped on the beach to ensure the safety of the nest and stayed there also in the morning. Usually after a day people no longer poach the eggs, so we can relax a bit. This shows us how important it is that we reach the beach early in the morning and can cover up the tracks of the turtles, which are easily seen far away at sea.

Now we also have something to look foward to, in 60 days we should see some little hatchlings emerge from the nest and hurry to the sea to start their dangerous journey.

Good Old Town

Old Town Hostel is as nice as I remembered. Nothing fancy, but clean and in good location. Warm shower, free wi-fi and tea&toast breakfast. That's all I need.

Phuket Town has clearly more tourists today than year ago. Many new shops, cafes and restaurants have opened in the area and where ever I walked, some other farang were around too. And that's fine as long as the town does not become a circus like Patong. At least the bars are not the girly-bar type, although a lot of the cafes and restaurants are western.

I also noticed that tuk-tuks have become bigger. New tuk-tuks are huge. I wonder if that is because the old ones could not carry the big westerners anymore. Or maybe people are becoming more wealthy and now they can afford bigger vehicles.

I visited Phuket Marine Biological Centre yesterday. They are located behind the Phuket Aquarium and there you can see some sea turtles. I had a chat with couple of the researches that work in the endangered marine species division. Really nice people. In the sea turtle project we will be collecting some skin samples for them and also we will provide all our information to them as well.

Then I got a guided tour around their sea turtle area. They have one fairly large pool with a beach for olive ridley captive breeding program, which unfortunately has not produced any eggs in 10 years. But apparently there is a small mating area in the pool, so maybe some time in the future there will be eggs also. They are also working on artificial fertilization project. Which is also very difficult.

They had few injured turtles, mainly green turtles and olive ridleys. Most problem being fishing hooks. Injured turtles are fed with sea weed and additional vitamins. There are 4 smaller pools with couple hundred green turtle babies from 3 months to little over 1 year old. These little fellows were very active swimming around the little pool.

The survival rate is about 50% even in captivity where protected from predators. It is not problem free to breed turtles in captivity, but their belief is that these turtles have a better chance of survival as they will be released to the sea when they are bigger. I nature only 1 hatchling in a 1000 survives to adulthood. But do the turtles raised in captivity behave the same as the ones born on the beach is the big question or do they lose some of the natural insticts. Researhers are studying this, but it will propably take a long time to get results. Sea turtles mature in 15-25 years depending on the species, so it is a long wai to see if they return to the beach to nest successfully.

In our sea turtle conservation project in Thailand, we let nature take its course as we believe that this is the best way. We protect the nests on the beach and by education out in the sea.

Today I will move to one of the Northern beaches of Phuket, Nai Yang beach. I will stay at Pen Siri House near the beach. But the beach is not why I am going there. I will volunteer two days at a dog rescue centre Soi Dog near by. Yes, this is my holiday week before the project work. Doing nice things, like volunteering to help dogs, is my kind of holiday. Beaches and pools and things are boring. :)

Patong Beach - Tylsä mesta

Siis tämä Patong Beach. Yhdessä päivässä jo sain tarpeekseni ja lähden huomenna Phuket Towniin. Buukkasin jo huoneen vanhasta tutusta Old Town Guesthousesta. Täällä Patongilla maksan ihan kivasta bungalowista 2000 bahtia/yö. Ihan liian kallista, mutta päätin lomailla pari päivää. Old townissa maksan 550/yö ja siihenkin kuuluu aamiainen. Tosin ei nyt American breakfast niinkun täällä. Mutta kuka sellaista edes kaipaa.

Olen ollut viimeksi Patongilla 2008 pidemmän aikaa. Silloinkin tämä oli mulle vähän liikaa, mutta nyt kun illalla kävelee Bangla Roadilla, se on kuin Las Vegas vilkkuvine valoineen, valotauluineen ja musiikin sekamelskaa. Tyttöbaareja on vierivieressä ja osassa "rock"-baareissa coverbändit esittävät listahiteistä omia versioitaan. Harmi kyllä en enää löytänyt sitä yhtä pientä aidohkoa rokkibaaria, jossa ei ollut tyttöjä, ja jossa bändi soitti omaa musiikkiaan. Se on varmaan työnnetty jonnekin syrjemmälle tai lopetettu kokonaan. Se ei varmastikaan ollut täällä vierailevan turistijoukon suosiossa.

Illalla kävin rannalla syömässä currya. Etsin Loma-ravintolaa, mutta siitä oli vain baari jäljellä. Ravintolat olivat jokseenkin sulautuneet yhdeksi ja samaksi pöytäkasaksi ja kaikki tarjoilijat yrittivät myydä omaa listaansa. Kaikki näyttivät samalta ja varmaan menukin oli sama. Päädyin kuitenkin istumaan yhteen niistä, kun en viitsinyt lähteä etsimään muutakaan. Ruoka oli maukasta.

Pääsyy miksi ylipäätään tulin Patongille oli se, että halusin käydä parissa kaupassa. Etsimääni alusvaateliikettä en löytänyt, mutta kirjakaupat olivat siellä missä ennenkin. Toinen on pieni kauppa Banglalla, jossa on uusia kirjoja ja toinen käytettyjen kirjojen kauppa Rat-u-thitilla. Olen käynyt tässä jälkimmäisessä nyt kaksi kertaa, sillä ensimmäisellä kerralla en löytänyt kuin yhden kirjan. Kävin välillä uusien kirjojen kaupassa, josta ostin kaksi kirjaa. Kirjanälkäni ei kuitenkaan tyydyttynyt sillä, vaan menin takaisin ja löysin 3 kirjaa lisää. Ja kaikki vielä hyviä. Löysin George Owellin 1984, The next 100 years ja Malcom Gladwellin Tipping Pointin. Kaikki kirjoja, joiden lukemista olen pohtinut aiemmin. Nyt on lukemista kuukaudeksi ehkä toiseksikin.

Paljon muuta ostettavaa en sitten ole löytänytkään. Toivottavasti Phuket Townin kaupoissa niitä vielä on. Jotenkin on jäänyt muutamia juttuja, jotka olen todennut hyviksi ja jotka nytkin haluaisin ostaa mukaani saareen. Yksi ihan välttämätön ostos on hyttyskarkote ja haluan juuri sen tietyn vihreän pullon, jossa on luonnollista citronella öljyä. Toinen mitä tarvitsen on vara varvastossut tai vastaavat popot. Merivesi ja hiekalla kävely kuluttavat kengät alta aikayksikön ja on hyvä olla varatossut, sillä Kuraburissa ei ole sopivia. Ja sitten minun pitää ostaa Uuden vuoden lahja.

Viime Uutena Vuotena oli hiukan noloa, kun en ollut tajunnut lahja-arpajaisten sisintä olemusta. Tajusin ihan viime tipassa, että jokaisen piti osallistua lahjalla, eikä rahalla. Meillä ei oikein ollut muuta kuin t-paitoja, joten laitoin meidän puolesta t-paidan ja kassin. Kaikki muut lahjat olivat jotain kotitaloustavaraa ja minusta tuntui, että meidän lahjan saanut henkilö oli todella pettynyt lahjaansa. Noloa. Nyt siis pitää ehdottomasti ostaa lahja, jonka on thaimaalaisten mielestä hieno ja tarpeellinen. Eli se pitää ostaa Phuketista, ei Kuraburista. Pitänee kysyä Lorylta neuvoa lahjan ostamiseen. En luota omaan makuuni tässä asiassa.

Huomenna siis kohti Phuket Townia. Pitää pakata rinkka ja reppu uudestaan ja toivoa, että jaksan kantaa kaiken hankkimani lisäpainon.

Good news In Thailand

I have arrived to Phuket and so has my backbag although it came with a later flight. I was not the only Finnish person who was left without the bag. It was quite funny when they told me that it did not make the flight in Helsinki. My backbag was more ecological than I and it came with the direct flight. :)

So at the airport everyone else had pretty much left and I had to wait 40 minutes for the next arriving flight to get enough people for the minivan. I was entertaining the minivan/taxi sales guys as I was holding the sign while the driver was bringing his car closer. It seemed to be hilarious as 5-6 guys were laughing and pointing at me. I was vey bad sales person and did not manage to get any more people to buy the ticket, so I had to wait.

In the ride to the beach, three people in front were discussing what to see and do in Thailand. They were talking about elephants and two had had exeperience in a elephant training camp and said it was hard work and recommended that the third guy would just go for a elephant riding tour. I had to bite my tounge and not to start explaining why he should not do that, but rather go to an animal sanctuary instead.

But why I actually started to write this post is that I was so positively surprised by The Phuket News paper. Asian newspapers are often full of crime news and convicted people's faces and so this time too, but starting from page 4 there were so many good news that I don't think I have seen in a while, maybe never.

There will be a beach and coral reef clean up day on the December 16th.

2000 buttefflies will be released to wild reserve on November 26th and there are funds raised for the Gibbon project.

Thai man has been arrested in South-Africa for coordinating Rhino horn smuggling.

Two vets from Singapore are arriving to Bangkok to help out their local colleagues to catch snakes and crocodiles.

Ok. This is bad news, but good topic. Two rhino species have gone extinct.

I learned something new about Thailand that every tourist should know, by Thai law guide jobs are for Thai people only. So if you have an international guide, they are not officially lisenced guides. There may be a Thai guide with you, but they are there to prevent the tour operator to be fined. I did not know this. This is a very good tip for responsible travel.

Culture page had a short story about elephants in tourism.

There is an environment page on which they talk about green research, there is a story about horse shoe crab and a Adopt a dog announcement from Soi Dog.

In the weird world (?) page there is a story about a woman who is eating road killed animals. Talk about happy meat. Maybe she has read the book Sick Puppy and was inspired.
